Extremely rare and unusual Fred Brosi hammered copper motto bookend. The bookends have the original and beautiful patina and the motto quoted byEdward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton:
\"There is no past long as Books shall live\"Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron LyttonPC(25 May 1803 – 18 January 1873), was an English novelist, poet, playwright, andpolitician. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream ofbestselling novelswhich earned him a considerable fortune. He coined the phrases \"the great unwashed\",\"pursuit of thealmighty dollar\", \"the pen is mightier than the sword\", \"dweller on the threshold\", as well as the infamous opening line \"It was a dark and stormy night\".
Fred Brosi was one of the earliest figures in the SF metalsmithing community. Documentation on his work appears as early as 1907, he rose to prominence in 1915 when he formed the Ye Olde Copper Shop with Hans Jauchen. This partnership only lasted a few years before Brosi formed the Old Mission Kopperkraft shop, which remained open until 1923.The bookends measure 5\" wide x 4-7/8\" tall and are in extraordinary fine condition. They include radial hammering surrounding the mottoby Lytton. The only oddity is the back of bookend is darker than the other. That\'s it!
I personally have never seenanother Fred Brosi set like these.
