This is a early 1900s gilded brass inkwell and pen holder in an Art Deco design. It looks to be from about the 1920\'s-30\'s. The base is cast from one piece on brass, the rims around the lids and the lids themselves are cast separately. The ink cups are made of engine turned copper. I believe, either the porcelain cup liners are missing, or it was designed for disposable glass ink bottles. When the ink is gone you throw away the old glass container and add a full new one. I\'m not sure which, as I received it as is.
The inkwell lids are hinged with brass pins and work perfectly. Each side of the front has a lip where you lay down your pen when not using it. It sits low with a distinct Art Deco style. It\'s design makes it very hard to spill. It\'s possible it could be a ships inkwell holder.The inkwells gilded surface has some spotting and patina from age and use. The character is great so it was only very lightly wiped clean. I find it neat that the left lid has much more patina than the right lid. It indicates it was used mostly by a right handed writer, using the left hand to open and close the left lid.This design is not rare but not particularly easy to find.
