For centuries, the Italians have been enjoying world renowned fame for their blown glass created in Italy and on Murano outside Venice. B ut their entrance into creating Christmas ornaments had its start in the late 1940s after World War II. Many German glass blowers had fled German and entered Northern Italy for safety. There, they needed a craft and began to work with Italian glass makers. The Germans taught them the art of creating molds, and blowing ornaments as they had done before the War. But the Italians did not do so well with these molded figural ornaments.

Thus they, with the assistance of the Germans, started free-blowing ornaments, as had not been done since the late 1800s into the early 1900s in Germany. These new figural free-blown ornaments were and immediate success, and a new novelty ornament came to the market.

These are blown from a single tube of glass, and free formed into the shape you see. Then, of course, painted, finished, capped, and they made their way to the American market. They were a little more expensive, so many of them appeared in high end department stores, jewelry stores, and other such fancy markets.

This ornament is not silvered inside.
