Early-Mid 1900\'s Primitive Caribbean Hand-Carved African Style Bongo Drum:
$20.00

This primitive African style bongo drum is one of the more interesting things I\'ve had a chance to obtain. It\'s been hand-carved from the trunk of a coconut palm tree and animal skin for a drum head. There is a pattern that looks like 4 leaves creating an X shape along the body. The size is 17\" tall, 7\" across, and 24\" in diameter and has a tripod legged bottom.There\'s a place along the edge where some of the skin and wood has been worn off over time. The way these kind of drums are played is with one hand supported on the top edge and the other hand left to move freely. This drum was played a lot through time. So much that someone wore away that area with their hand. The drum has been traced to the Caribbeanarea because of the material it\'s made of, coconut palm, and where it was found, which is Florida and it\'s created in the common style of the African bongo drum. Other than that the origin is unknown. There\'s many possibilities that I leave to the buyer to research.Florida has a rich history of many people from all the different Caribbean Islands and, with time, someone may be able to track it down.In very raw condition the wood and skin are very dry and layered with patina. A few of the wooden pins that hold the skin on are missing. It\'s so old the skin is shaped to the body. There\'s a few small cracks, hardly visible, also. This is a piece that looks better just left alone. It looks like something you would see in a museum.It\'s definitely a great conversation piece. It should strike the interest of someone who collects primitives, hand-made musical instruments, or has a room with a rustic nautical decor.Happy offerding!
