Early bowl by Gunnar Nylund from Saxbo (Nylund & Krebs) - Danish art pottery:
$119.00

This sale is for a very early stoneware bowl designedby Gunnar Nylund and made at Nylund & Krebs in 1929-30.

Before evolving into Saxbo, Nylund & Krebs consistedonly of its two founders, Nathalie Krebs and Gunnar Nylund, along with theirsole workman, thrower Olsen. The studio itself was located in the city of Islevoutside Copenhagen and had been built and previously used by the father ofmodern Danish stoneware, Patrick Nordström. From the very beginning on the 1stof March 1929 until late December 1930 where Gunnar Nylund left to work atRörstrand in Sweden, all models were designed by Gunnar Nylund while NathalieKrebs created the glazes. Only unique pieces were signed by Gunnar Nylund withhis initials.

The bowl measures W12 x H3 cm.

It is clearly marked on the bottom with theoven-shaped logo and \'N&K\' beneath. The \'6\' is a model number and by farthe lowest I’ve ever had in my possession. The low model number also makes thisbowl one of Nylund’s earliest designs at N&K. The \'III\' indicates that thebowl was made in three sizes whereas this particular piece is most likely thesmallest.

Its condition is really excellent with nodamage or any significant signs of wear. The green glaze has overall crazingand while some of the heavier craze lines might look like hairline cracks, there are absolutely none.

Please keep in mind that this bowl is one of theearliest examples of modern, serial and independently produced Danishstoneware. It was made under very primitive conditions by Nylund, a Swedishceramist and Krebs, a Danish engineer of which none had never worked on theirown before. Their professional relationship ended shortly after it even startedand today extremely few pieces from this important collaboration seem to havesurvived.

In the spring of 2015 a very large exhibition solelycelebrating Saxbo will open for the public at the Vejen Art Museum in Jutland,Denmark. It will be the first of its kind in over 50 years and is not only longoverdue but also highly anticipated. Later, the first ever book covering everyaspect of Saxbo and its equally legendary founder, Nathalie Krebs, will follow.Vejen Art Museum previously held a very successful solo exhibition about thefantastic Danish ceramist Arne Bang. Without any accompanying literaturecovering his works it substantially raised the worldwide knowledge of Arne Bangand created a still ongoing frenzy for his beautiful stoneware. I stronglysuspect the same happening with Saxbo so now is most likely the right time tobuy.

I personally love Saxbo stoneware with their elegantand confident shapes, beautiful yet subtle glazes and the obvious, oftenhandmade quality. Besides being a collector of Saxbo myself (and sometimesseller) I also did some volunteer work as personal assistant for the directorof the small Saxbo museum in Herlev. Though small in size the museum has thelargest public collection of Saxbo in Denmark including unique artifacts like large, hand drawn sketches by Eva Stæhr-Nielsen, Krebs’ priced glaze samples andvarious tools used in creating the many beautiful stoneware pieces.

As I sense there is a growing interest worldwide inSaxbo I’ve recently made a fan-page on Facebook where all Saxbo enthusiasts canfind information, post questions and perhaps show their own collection ofSaxbo. I will update the page from time to time with pictures, variousknowledge and news. Feel free to check it out by following this link:

I take great pride in making sure that any purchaseditem will arrive 100% intact to the winning buyer. As a collector myself I’verepeatedly experienced the awful disappointment of waiting anxiously for weeksonly to receive an item that’s been damaged due to inferior packing. I do mybest not to put any of my customers in that unpleasant position. My recipe issimply but effective. Every item sold will be enclosed throughout thick layersof bubble wrap, then packed in a sturdy cardboard box filled with packingchips. Finally, all surfaces of the box are reinforced with extra strong andbrightly colored tape saying FRAGILEhopefully ensuring a safe trip. Pieces that are particularly delicate orvaluable will be double boxed. All items have been washed and cleanedextensively before being offered for sale.

I took the pictures outside in bright sunshine to showthis piece and especially its glaze from their very best side. Therefore thecolors of the piece might look darker/duller when put on display inside inregular daylight.

If you have any questions I’ll be more than happy tohelp you – just ask :)
