Edwardian 1920s White Silk Tea Dress With Art Deco Flounces and Blue Sash Sz 6

Description

An original Edwardian or early 1920s white silk tea gown, tea dress or lawn dress with wonderful diagonal flounces on each side, front and back, that fall in soft folds down the sides of the skirt. The flounces, when held up, give an Erte style profile and are very art deco, suggesting that the time period for this garment is more into the early 1920s. However, it could also be late Edwardian, and the blousy front of the bodice would suggest this time period is more likely. The styling details are beautiful - the sleeves are very fitted but are provided with a wide area for elbow movement. The cuffs are gathered and edged with lace. The shoulders each have a wide pleat on the shoulder, and a wide panel which flows down each side of the front bodice and comes together at the waist, leaving a triangular panel in the center. The attachment for the dress is a row of snaps at one side of the inserted front V panel, and follows down into the skirt along the edge of the flounce on the left side, and one hook and eye at the waist. The wide shoulder bodice panels also flow over the back and cross over just above center waist. The back bodice has a shorter V insert which is made into a clever vent. The inside of the bodice is lined with net, but not the sleeves. The center V panel in the back is attached to the net lining, while the wide panels that come over the shoulder blades do not. The skirt is very gathered at the waist, and the flounce panels make an inverted V on each side of the skirt framed with draped flounces. The neckline, bodice V inserts, cuffs and flounces are all edged with a fine lace. The dress appears to be professionally made, with both hand and machine stitching, although there is no label. The fabric is a silk or silk blend. Given the good state of preservation of the fabric, I suspect that it is a silk blend, probably silk and linen which was commonly used in this period, and which has much better longevity than pure silks, which are prone to deterioration over time. The silk is light weight - wonderful for the heat of summer and semi sheer, which would require a slip. The dress is finished with a robins egg pale blue sash made of period horsehair ribbon and with a wide bow in the back, which has two hooks and eyes under the bow. The dress has simple lines and elegant styling with wonderful drape.

The approximate measurements of the dress are as follows:

  • Bust (pit to pit): 34\"
  • Waist 24\"
  • Hips full
  • Shoulder to hem 51\" plus a 3 3/4\" hem
  • neckline to back center waist 14 1/2\"
  • sleeves (pit to cuff) 18\" to the outer (longest) edge of the cuff
  • Cuffs 7\" around with no give but could be let out where they are gathered
  • Shoulder to shoulder across the back 14\"

These measurements are approximately equivalent to a modern US size 6. A critical measurement is the waist, as there is no stretch here and no additional hem to expand. The dress is just above the ankle on my 6\' model and would be full length on a person of average height.

There are no major condition issues with the dress. However, this is an antique garment that is more than 100 years old. The fabric is sheer but strong. There may be some minor signs of wear consistent with age including:

  • there is a small area at the front waist, which is under the sash and inside the skirt part of the dress, where the inserted V panel crosses under the panel that comes down from the shoulder, that looks like it could use a snap or hook and eye to hold it is place, although this area would need to be reinforced a little with a small piece of facing to be able to hold a snap or hook and eye. This is a minor repair that could be easily done by hand. This area is under the sash, and the dress can be worn without the repair, but the bottom of the center V panel will stay in place better if a snap was put there.
  • there are some small repairs at other points on the waist, also under the sash
  • there are a few tiny pinholes here and there - hard to find
  • there are a few pinholes in the bodice net lining, and one repair about an inch long that also has some rusty color on it - this is inside the back bodice at the right back shoulder. The net lining is strong and resilient.
  • there is a small faint stain at the waist, about the size of a pencil eraser and rusty colored, also hidden by the sash
  • the snaps and hooks and eye have been replaced with newer ones, but they seem to be all there except for the one mentioned above
  • There may be some additional minor signs of wear consistent with the age of this garment that I did not notice.

The dress has been recently gently laundered and is clean and fresh. A great collectible for the Edwardian or art deco fan. This is NOT a reproduction, this is a real Edwardian or early 1920s art deco silk tea dress with Erte style flounces, beautiful detailing, and a lovely robins egg blue waist sash and bow. Another great Edwardian or 1920s art deco tea dress, only from Antiquarius Antiques. Scroll down to see more pictures of the tea dress, which are part of the description.

If you are looking for new and perfect, then vintage is probably not for you. In many cases, vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items. Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear. But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item. Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
