This beautiful painting is based on the limestone relief found in the Royal Tomb at Amarna, which depicts Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and one of their daughters making an offering to the sun-disk Aten. There are flowers laid on the table beneath the \"life-giving\" rays of the Aten. To emphasize the strength and power of the Pharaoh, Egyptian iconographical tradition required the female figure to be smaller in scale than the male.
Papyrus is a thick, paper-like material made from the triangular stems of the Cyperus papyrus plant. This plant can reach heights of up to 15 feet tall and grows naturally along the Nile River. Ancient Egyptians started making paper from the papyrus plant 5,000 years ago, and the earliest archaeological evidence of papyrus was excavated on the Red Sea coast. (At one time, papyrus was the major export of Egypt.) The modern word \"paper\" originates from the word \"papyrus.\" The modern technique of papyrus production used in Egypt today was developed in 1962 by the Egyptian engineer Hassan Ragab. Papyrus is still used by Egyptians today, particularly in communities found in the vicinity of swamps. People use papyrus to make baskets, hats, fish traps, trays and floor mats. Of course it can also be used for paintings, like the one shown here.
