Nebmertuf - 18th dynasty seated scribe statue Dimensions :-Height -12.5 cm / 5 inchesWidth -  7 cm / 2-3/4 inches
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone, this particular statue has a well developed aged  black / slate grey colouration that gives this nicely proportioned scribe statue a look of antiquity. Of 18th dynasty date, the delicate and determined features present on this statue are typical of the best in small scale sculptures of the period.   * Combined postage welcome.   Background information - The scribe statue form became popular during Egypt\'s old kingdom as scribes became relatively well paid members of Egyptian society & could afford to commision a statue of themselves so they could be immortalized. This tradition continued for the majority of Egypts\' great expanse of history.
The scribe kept accounts of a numerical nature and documents of events, disputes and even poetry. This actual piece is a copy of an original statue now located in the Louvre museum and it depicts the scribe Nebmertuf. This piece is merely one removable part of a larger statue group that features Nebmertuf in this seated position below a figure of Thoth, in the form of the baboon. Thoth was the patron god of writing, knowledge and wisdom, thus was the god of choice for scribes such as Nebmertuf.  Nebmertuf\'s legs are crossed with an unrolled papyrus revealed in his lap showing a hint of etched hieroglyphs. He wears a fine braided wig that was very fashionable during the 18th Dynasty and the individual locks radiate from a circular crown of hair.
