Description

Mid-eighteenth century lidded Flagon of a taperingcylindrical form on a flared circular base.The piece is richly parcel gilt and features a large scroll handle whichterminates in a heart shaped tail. Thesides contain a high relief repousse design which features flowers, leaves, andscrolls. The handle contains two insulators. The top of the lid isstamped with the lion passant guardant(in heraldic terms, the lion walking tothe left with its right paw up and its head turned to look at thespectator)which was used prior to 1831 as a hallmark guaranteeing the sterlingsilver standard at 92.5%. Near the topof the body are the markings for the maker’s mark ‘SB’; the lion passantguardant; the Newcastle date letter ‘T’ circumscribed in a shield for1765-1766; the leopard’s head; and the assay office mark for Newcastle. The side of the handle is marked with themaker’s mark ‘SB’.

Condition

Thispiece contains a few minor dings. There is a little toggle in the handle. Overall it is in very goodcondition, given it is almost 250 years old.
