Simple, elegant, the height of 1950\'s fashion: a modernist design yet evocative of the natural world.
No maker\'s mark so I don\'t know whomade these or when, but my guess is they are hand-made in a professional machine shop. I suggest that for the particular reason that the backs are not completely straight up and down- they lean forward a bit. When you place the pieces back-to-back, this looks like a flaw or damage. But these are thick, solid-cast bronze, no way they got bent in general useover the years; so my thought is they were designed deliberately that way. And why might that be so? Look at my last few pictures where the pieces actually are holding up books - their forward lean anticipates the the actual behavior of the books: pushed together at their bases, the outer books tend to lean outward. The bookends fit just right.
Anyway, that is my theory. I was an English major.
