Each Rubbing is a hand made original
This is a hand made rubbing of Sir William Fitzralph, created with metallic gold wax crayon on a special black rag paper. This is a large rubbing 36\" high X 15\" wide. Sir William\'s original brass is dated 1323 and can be found in Pedmarsh in the County of Essex in England. Several hundreds of these monumental \'brasses\' adorned the churches throughout England, but religious purges in the 1500\'s and 1600\'s destroyed or damaged many. It was the custom in medieval England for those who could afford it, to have brass plaques engraved to their memory. These were often tomb markers and portraits and were laid on the floor or walls of the local church. This rubbing of Sir William, shows the first introduction of plate armour after the purely mail armour previously used and is said to be one of the few, very fine and very early military brasses.
