ENGLISH STERLING SILVER KETTLE & STAND; LORD SOMERSET, 1ST BARON RAGLAN; FROM CHARLES HATFIELD, 1727; EXCELLENT /CENTER>

We are pleased to offer this museum worthy Baron Raglan kettle on stand.

The arms are those of Somerset impaling Wellesley. For Lord Fitz Roy Somerset (1788-1855). 1st Baron Raglan and his wife.

Descended in the family until the present time.

Crafted by one of the most important makers of the day Charles Hatfield.

Apprenticed 1711 to Joseph Barbutt turned over to David Willaume 1712.

Appointed one of the Subordinate Goldsmiths to King George from 1723 to 1729.

It was during this time that our Baron Raglan kettle was crafted.

Examples from Hatfield in major museum collections.

Koopman, London Vaults offered a 6 inch pair of candlesticks for 8750 GBP or $15,000 USD, without provenance.

Christies, London June 2005 sold a similar pair for 6600GBP or $12,000 USD.

Classic circular almost globular form.

Center beautifully engraved coat arms and motto. Amidst shell and floral sprays, pebbled surface medallion.

Cover with original rosewood saucer and silver ball finial.

Atop matching footed stand. Original hallmarked urn shape burner, both with crest.

Pierced classical maiden and streaming garland rail. Atop thick bent knee in-curved corner hexagonal feet.

During this very period the present kettle and stand crafted.

This important 1727 Lord Fitz Roy Somerset kettle on stand is 13 inches tall and 80 standard ounces.

Hallmarked as shown.

In very fine condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands perfectly firm on table or display shelf. The classical masks and floral retain most of their original detail. Handle secure loss to original leather covering underneath center, see close up. Few mild dints and some wear to the coat of arms and crests.
