AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY EDWIN LANKESTER, ENGLISH SURGEON WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONTROL OF CHOLERA. Together with: AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY NONCONFORMIST PREACHER AND RADICAL SOCIAL REFORMER GEORGE DAWSON [tipped onto the verso of the Lankester letter]. [London], U.K.: November 3, 1876. 15 words penned in black ink & filling one side of a 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide cream-colored sheet of his letterhead with his Hampstead address printed in raised lettering in blue at the top. Signed \"Edwin Lankester\". The lower third of the letter is mounted on a piece of card & there is offsetting to the letter from the glue on the verso. Folded twice for mailing. Good.
Together with the George Dawson note, the lower half of which is mounted on the same piece of card: Edgebaston, Birmingham, U.K.: June 27th, circa [1870]. 21 words penned in black ink on a 6 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide sheet of cream-colored paper. Signed \"George Dawson\". There is some minor soiling to the letter. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.
Lankester writes: \"Please add my name to Mr. Hasting\'s Committee it it can be of any service\".
Edwin Lankester [1814-1874] was born in Melton, Suffolk. He was an English surgeon and naturalist known for his microscopic examination of drinking water, which made a major contribution to the control of cholera in London. He was the first pubic analyst in England. Thomas Henry Huxley became a close friend of Lankester\'s family. Darwin\'s tutor John Stevens Henslow was also a family friend and introduced Edwin\'s son Ray to the delights of fossil collecting.
Nonconformist preacher and radical social reformer George Dawson [1821-1876] writes from Birmingham, thanking his correspondent for sending him the works of Carlyle.
