In 44 small scenes this canvas painting illustrates the story of Queen Mackda (Queen of Sheba), King Solomon, and Menelik I. It also accounts the story-line that links the ancient Ethiopian Empire with the Solomonic Dynasty and how the Ark of the Covenant ended up in Ethiopia. The source for this pictorial account is the ancient document, Kebra Negast, The Book of the Glory of the Kings. The painting begins how Ethiopians were once terrorized by a serpent and one man’s determination (Mackda’s father) to get rid of this serpent. The man killed the serpent by feeding it a poisoned goat and this man was Mackda’s father who later became the king of Ethiopia. After his death, his daughter Mackda (later Queen of Sheba) was crowned as the queen. The remaining part of the painting depicts how the queen went on a journey to Israel, met King Solomon and came back to her country pregnant with her son, Menelik. Upon reaching his adulthood, Menelik wanted to meet his father and set on a journey to Israel. He met King Solomon who educated him on the arts and skills of leadership. Upon returning to Ethiopia it is believed that he brought the Ark of the Covenant. He was also crowned as king upon the death of his mother, Queen of Sheba.
