Exceptional Solid Silver William IV Vinaigrette Birmingham 1833 William Pugh:

This is an exceptional solid silver gilded vinaigrette made during the reign of King William IV. It has an engine turned finish throughout with raised decorative borders. Inside there is a hinged, intricate, and finely engraved grill together with what remains of the original sponge. There is a blank cartouche on the front which means the lucky purchaser could personalise it, should they so wish. It feels very tactile to hold.It is quite rare to find such items of this quality and desirability.

Condition is excellent. There are no splits, dents or repairs, just the usual light surface marks which are commensurate with a piece of silver which is almost 200years old.The hinges are strong and the lids both close with a nice tight fit and no play. The vinaigrette has retained its original gilded interior which shows that it has had hardly any use over the years. It is very desirable and would compliment any collection. A wonderful example and the best of its type that I have had the pleasure to own. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required.

Hallmarks are crisp, showing Birmingham 1833, the maker being William Pugh. He entered into business in 1804 and operated from premises in Suffolk Street, Birmingham. He was a highly respected Georgian silversmith, producing a wide range of silver boxes, caddy spoons, ladles and vinaigrettes. This is a fantastic example of his work.

The vinaigrette measures 3cm x 1.8cm x 1cm and weighs 14g.
