Rare African Tribal Antique Dogon Hand Forged Iron Figure (circa late 1800s)

From the old private collection.

The figure size is about 10\" in height.

This forged iron figure shares the long tradition of figurative iron, bronze, and brass casting reaching back to the period of Dogon - the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12th century. This standing figure of a with an elongated body demonstrates the technical skill of the metal caster in developing a form that is sculpturally descriptive as well as reflecting the artist\'s ability to project great power in a metal figure.
They would do the smelting to get the iron from iron ore, then heat and hammer out both the tools and weapons used and the important ritual objects.

According to Bambara beliefs, the soul of the deceased ascends thru branches or parts of a sacred tree (Bana tree) in order to gain access to the seven heavens and the after life. The iron staffs and iron figures are also used during funeral initiation ceremonies. These small figures are placed upright near the sanctuary in which larger figures were kept.
