In the cellars of The Taylor Wine Company deep in a mountainside in upstate New York, a unique champagne began mellowing in 1966. This champagne is unique because it was produced wholly from the Aurore grape.
The Aurore (pronounced \"Aurora\") is a French-American hybrid grape native to New York State. Little known in 1966, it is now considered one of the finest wine-growing grapes in the world! it produced a remarkable champagne of exceptional quality, with a distinctive, mellow taste that is very different from other champagnes. One may consider it a sparkling liqueur.
The late Fred C. Taylor, a son of the winery\'s founder, believed this champagne to be a part of his legacy to American wine making. His wishes and hopes for the future and his gratitude to America are expressed in this special Bicentennial Champagne. Mr. Taylor limited production to 4,800 bottles and stipulated that the champagne bottle-rest for ten years. After that, it should be used only for an \"extraordinary occasion.\"
That occasion was naturally America\'s Bicentennial; and The Taylor Wine Company respectfully dedicated this extraordinary champagne to the nation\'s 200th birthday.
Each bottle was numbered and registered in the Taylor wine cellars in Hammondsport. Bottle Numbered 0 was presented to the President in the name of the people of the United States, Numbered 00 to the Vice President. Bottles Numbered One through Fiffty were presented to each of the States in order of their accession. Bottles Numbered 1776, 1976, and 1880 (the year Taylor was founded) have been specially packaged for permanent display in the Bicentennial Exhibit Room at the Taylor winery.
The label is a replica of the winning entry in a design contest held in 1974 among New York State college students. The winning submission was done by Ms. Carol Terrizzi, a student at Coming Community College. Her design was executed in needlepoint on a homespun background using the technique and material employed in handcrafts done during the days of the Revolution. It now hangs in the Bicentennial Exhibit Room in the winery.
The Taylor Bicentennial Champagne was authorized by The Bicentennial Council of the Thirteen Original States as an official Bicentennial project of The Council and proudly incorporates The Council\'s symbol of 13 stars linked together as part of the registration seal on the neck of the bottle.
The Bicentennial Council is the only official organization representing the Bicentennial Commissions of the Thirteen Original States. Its support is reserved for programs that will broaden understanding of the importance of participation in the commemoration of the American Revolution.
