We are listing this extremely rarely seen 1718 Georgian rat tailed Brittania silver marrow spoon by the London silversmith Edward Jennings. Marrow spoons (a combination of a serving spoon and a marrow scoop) are one of the most rarely seen pieces of specialized silver used by the Georgian gentry - in this case to scoop the marrow out of bones (when that was a great delicacy), and early 1700s rat tailed marrow spoons made of rarely seen Brittania silver are almost nonexistent. Brittania silver is a higher fineness then sterling silver (.958 versus .925), and it was only used as the English silver standard during the 1697-1720 period (the rat tail on the back of this spoon bowl was a feature also primarily used only during the same time period). The marrow spoon is marked on the back of its handle (the flat area between the two bowls) with a Brittania mark, a Lions Head Erased mark (only used with Brittania silver), the date letter C (used in 1718-1719), and a rarely seen Ie maker\'s mark with a heart above it. This mark was registered in 1710 by London silversmith Edward Jennings (see page 96 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The marrow spoon is 8.75 inches long, weighs 1.9 ounces (of rarely seen Brittania silver), it is very nicely shaped, and it is in very good condition (a few tiny scratches from use). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the piece has not been professionally polished). Georgian marrow spoons are very rarely seen, and a 300 year old fully hallmarked rat tailed one made of Brittania silver is extremely rare.
