1)TheRoad into the Open by Arthur Schnitzler (1991, Paperback) NEW. RARE PAPERBACKEDITION OF CRITICALLY IMPORTANT WORK.

Synopsis

A finely drawn portrayal of the disintegration of Austrian liberal society under the impact of nationalism and anti-semitism, The Road into the Open (Der Weg ins Freie,1908) is a remarkable novel by a major Austrian writer of the early twentieth century. Set in fin-de-siècle Austria--the cafés, salons, and musical concerts frequented by the Viennese elite--Schnitzler\'s perceptive exploration of the creative process and the private lives and public aspirations of urban Jewish intellectuals ranks with the highest achievements of Karl Kraus and Robert Musil. The novel\'s central character, Baron Georg von Wergenthin, is a handsome young composer whose troubled relations with women, musical collaborators, and representatives of the old social order make Schnitzler\'s book a revealing investigation of individual psychology and social allegory. In his comprehensive introduction, Russell Berman situates the book within the literary and political history of Central Europe and analyzes its relation to psychoanalysis, Marxism, musical aesthetics, and the legacy of European modernism.

Offers a finely drawn portrayal of the disintegration of Austrian liberal society under the impact of nationalism and anti-semitism.

By the author of the highlyacclaimed literary bestseller Dictionary of the Khazars, this is a taleof a mysterious quest that is part modern Odyssey and part crossword puzzle. Itbegins with the story of a brilliant but failed architect in Belgrade and hissearch for his father, an officer who vanished in Greece during World War II. The truth about his fate—some of it set in motion 2,000 years ago and some ofit by the Nazis—is raveled in the history and secrets of Mount Athos, the mostancient of all monasteries, perched atop its inaccessible mountain on theAegean.“A hugely ambitious, playful, inventive, demanding, magical, linguisticallysensuous reading experience.”—The Washington Post“A brilliantly playful and haunting novel.”—The New York Times Book Review

From LibraryJournal

The everyday life of Berliners during theturbulent years of the Weimar Republic (1918-33) is movingly revealed here.Friedrich, who is associated with the Museumspadagogische Dienst in Berlin andwho specializes in the photographic history of this period, has assembled fromBerlin archives almost 300 \"rarely seen\" photographs, written a lucidtext, and captioned each photograph. He provides a spellbinding look at thecontrasts that existed in this restless city from the severe economicdeprivations to glorious artistic and technological achievements. The unusuallysharp images portray the hungry in soup lines, masses of striking workers,uniformed patrols quelling rioters, innovative architectural structures, garishcabaret life, scenes from acclaimed film and theater productions, leisureactivities, and the distressing presence of storm troopers. In addition,British poet Stephen Spender has contributed an eloquent foreword. A masterfulwork for all library collections.

Ironcurtain, Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, DDR, Holocaust literature, Germany,Poland, Judaism, Nazism, Eastern Europe,Judaica reading.

This is ahandsome portrait of Berlin, from 1914 to 1933 and the accession of the Nazisto power. The principal feature of the book - its raison d\'être -- is nearly300 black-and-white photographs from German archives, excellently reproducedand printed. They are complemented by about fifty pages of integrated text.The photographs cover seemingly all aspects of life in the Berlin of the WeimarRepublic: governmental buildings; street scenes; revolutionary workers at thebarricades; soup kitchens; slums; preeminent examples of International Modernarchitecture; cabarets and night life; the Berlin Philharmonic underFurtwängler; Potsdamer Platz and the Kurfürstendamm; the lakeside resort atWannsee; striking workers; and fights between SA members and the police. Thecollection is a lot like an early edition of \"LIFE\" Magazine, exceptof Berlin rather than the U.S.The text and photographs are organized by chapters, as follows:
* The Imperial Legacy
* Revolution and Crisis
* A Tour of the City
* Art and Culture
* Everyday Life
* The End of the RepublicThe text has been translated from German, perhaps a tad too literally, for attimes it is somewhat cumbersome and lumbering. Substantively, though, I foundit more than satisfactory in providing an overview of interwar Berlin and theappropriate context for the photographs.The book would be ideal for anyone wishing to get a good feel for Berlinbetween the wars. It also would be ideal for a good public or school library(if either of those things still exist).

This novel wasoriginally released in 1946. Sholem Asch was a popular writer in that period.He died in 1957. The story takes place in NY City, in early 1900s. The readerbecomes aquatinted with the immigrant Jewish residents of 48th St. The peopleare orthodox jews and adhere strictly to the rituals of their faith. Most ofthis story centers around a mixed religious marriage and the heartache itbrings. Nath is a brilliant polio crippled young man who finally finds his way toa life of fulfillment. Most the people are poor and do contract work for thegarment industry. They are paid pitiful amounts and living conditions arewretched. The labor movement is early, but much needed to enforce the childlabor laws. Asch is different from many of the writers of today. After 438pages, problems are solved and nearly everybody lives happily ever after.

Gives an awareness ofthe struggles for the first generations of immigrants. Having escaped tyrannyin Russia, Slavic countries, Poland, Italy they fled to the USA for a brighterfuture only to find themselves in sweatshops in the garment district, behindpushcarts or struggling in small business in the East side New York. Againslaves in a system in order to feed their poor families. Unions evolved.Religious orthodoxy became diluted. Some out of their own enterprise went fromhaving nothing to become millionaires owning large companies. The debatescontinued as to what political system works.... socialism, capitalism, communismetc. There were no answers, just debates and struggle. This book puts apersonal face on the struggle with each unique character. Asch is a talentedwriter, himself a child of immigrant parents. He was a famous Yiddishplaywright. He has a strong Jewish point of view in his writing. If you are3rd/4th generation of immigrant Jewish parents, I strongly suggest you readthis book. You will have a renewed respect for your parents/ grandparents pointof view...their struggle, and why they raised you as they did.

From Publishers Weekly

Much given tofigurative and aphoristic language, which sometimes turns purple in criticalrhapsody, Italian biographer Citati (Goethe) examines Kafka\'s diary and lettersin a revisionist attempt to discover the human origins of that writer\'s fictions,arguing that Kafka envisioned an authoritarian \"god of literature\"who forced him to \"transform his life, his mind and his body into a\'precisely articulated\' instrument to secrete literature as the great writerswhom he admired had done.\" Kafka\'s inner torments, variously attributed byother biographers to the dreaded influence of his father, the God of the OldTestament or the dreary bureaucratic ossification of Europe as he knew it, arehere pronounced \"literary\" in origin, without diminishing the scopeof the work (Amerika , The Trial , The Castle and others are thoroughlyglossed). Citati takes a fresh and welcome approach, but one that isintentionally selective and finally incomplete, restricted to the period ofKafka\'s mature writings (roughly from 1913 to his death in 1924) and decliningto treat in depth his early life or the formative political events of histimes.

Citati focuses onretelling Kafka\'s novels and major stories, relating his work to his life , andexplicating both as religious allegories dealing with the plight of those whobelieve in God after the death of God. Yet though they are often pumped up byrhetoric and purple prose, Citati\'s interpretations seem too thin to do justiceto Kafka, the enigmatic myths he created out of his life of renunciation, thequalities of his prose, and the special place his vision and myths hold inmodern literature. Nevertheless, this book may appeal to those seeking a basicintroduction to Kafka\'s life and works.

8)TooFar Afield by Günter Grass (2000, Hardcover) NEW! RARE FIRST EDITION OFCRITICALLY IMPORTANT NOVEL. Dust Jacket.

Synopsis

From the Nobel Prize-winning author of My Century and The Tin Drum, a novel of broad historical proportions set in Berlin during the years of German reunification. Two old men roam through Berlin observing life in the former German Democratic Republic after the fall of the Wall in 1989. Theo Wuttke, a former East German functionary, is a keen observer and a gifted speaker. Ludwig Hoftaller is a mid-level spy whose loyalties shift with each new regime. Together, both men see what the future is bringing as they try to save what they can from the past and understand the meaning of being German. A complex and challenging exploration of what Germany\'s reunification will mean-for Germans, for Europe, and for the world-Too Far Afield is a masterwork from one of Europe\'s greatest writers. Written with the wit, fantasy, literary erudition, and political acerbity for which Grass is celebrated, it is a deeply human story laced with pain and humor in equal measure., Two old men roam through Berlin observing life in the former German Democratic Republic after the fall of the Wall in 1989. The men are Theo Wuttke, a former East German cultural functionary, keen observer, and gifted speaker; and Ludwig Hoftaller, a mid-level spy who can serve the Prussian police, or the Gestapo, or the East German Stasi with equal dedication. Both men are employed by the Treuhand-the agency in charge of privatizing former East German state enterprises-which occupies the building in Berlin that was once the headquarters of Goering\'s Air Ministry. Wuttke, in his capacity as file courier, desperately tries to save the old-fashioned elevator, which has carried the famous and powerful up-and down again. And he comforts the disheartened head of the agency, who seeks relief from the burdens of office by roller skating around the corridors at night. This novel will stand as perhaps the most complex and challenging exploration of what Germany\'s recent reunification will mean-for Germans, for Europeans, for the world. Grass writes with the wit, fantasy, literary erudition, and political acerbity for which he is celebrated. And in his inimitable fashion, he tells a deeply human story laced with pain and humor in equal measure.

The tragedy of Polish Jewry,the population decreased from the three and a half million of pre-World War IIto 5000, the majority elderly, in 1980is made painfully palpable through theirreminiscences recorded here and through Tomaszewski\'s color photographs: of a tailorwho laments his daughter\'s interfaith marriage, a brushmaker who has beenbaptized yet leads the synagogue prayers, the first Warsaw child to celebrate abar mitzvah in 30 years. A community leader, without self-pity, tells Americantourists to \"bring us youth, joy, life . . . Remnants is a sad, touching look at the last ofPoland\'s long-suffering Jewish minority. The story of the group, now numberingless than 5000 mostly old and tortured souls, is sympathetically captured by ayoung Polish couple in a series of short interviews and over 70 poignantphotographs. Tragedy, of course, is the common denominator, and the experiencesof those in Remnants is largely one of Holocaust, pogrom, degradation, andpoverty. Their triumph, if any, has been in their ability to survive and toretain cherished fragments of their culture. This is an excellent word pictureof the Jewish experience in Poland. Highly recommended to libraries with largeJewish studies collections. Joseph W. Constance, Jr., Georgia State Univ. Lib.,Atlanta

Synopsis

A photographic portrait of the world of jazz music. Presented as a stream of 196 images interspersed with DeCarava\'s own poetry, this volume is, in its form and overall effect, a printed equivalent of jazz -composed of overlapping passages of pain, sweetness, optimism and suffering. Roy DeCarava has documented the people, both famous and anonymous, and the seemingly mundane yet intimate moments of his Harlem neighbours and neighbourhood. The result is at once a work for photography enthusiasts, an historic documentation for jazz lovers, and a profound message to African-Americans as well as Whites that artistic talent knows no boundaries of race., An engaging exploration of synagogues, their history and decoration., Retells the history of Jewish communities through the architecture and decorative art associated with the synagogue. This book traces the history of the synagogue from its origins in Solomon\'s Temple to the classic simplicity of the modern synagogue., Synagogues, their history and decoration, represent an illuminating record of the cultural and artistic history of the Jewish people. As a focal point for community life as well as a spiritual centre, the synagogue has both a symbolic and a practical significance. From its origins in the Tabernacle, through the exuberant Venetian synagogues of the Renaissance, to the often stark simplicity of modern buildings, Harold Meek examines the fascinating story of the building that remains central to every Jewish community. His spirited narrative shows the diverse ways in which a vast array of cultural influences have merged to produce a rich and coherent heritage in the fields of architecture and decoration. A meticulously researched and magnificently illustrated tome, The Synagogue combines spiritual and aesthetic sensitivity with a passion for human creativity, producing an erudite and accessible introduction not just for the scholar, but for anybody with an interest in the subject.

What an indispensablelittle book this is! It collects 240 full-color photographs of motifs on Jewishgravestones, breaking them down into family symbols, workman\'s tools, Talmudicreferences, etc. Like an encyclopedia, it defines each symbol, gives areference from the Bible or Jewish lore, and remarks on the differences insymbolism from one community to the next. The artistry of tombstone carvers hasnever, in my experience with cemetery books, been as completely or asbeautifully documented as this.Inside are gravestones that depict Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac,candelabra which were believed to ward off grave robbers, hands feeding thecharity box, skeletons with scythes, Jewish cherubim, lions, monkeys, fantasticbirds, even a scorpion (which the author can\'t explain). The variety isstartling and impressive.My only disappointment with the book is the size of some of the photos. Atwo-page layout demonstrating the blessing hands motif contains 28 pictures,each less than two inches square!Throughout the book, the photographs themselves are wonderfully reproduced,even the tiny ones. The printing captured the spectrum of lichen, as well asthe ivy and grasses that surround the stones. The stones themselves seem roughenough to touch. The sunshine looks as if it\'s warmed the stones. Theoccasional shadow looks chilly.Chaim Potok\'s foreword explores the second commandment (\"No gravenimages\") and its relationship to the creatures here displayed. He groundshis discussion in passages from the Talmud and Jewish authorities (whom I wishhe had named), saying that there was never any consensus on what constituted animage. Perhaps tombstone carvings are permissible because they are in lowrelief, rather than three-dimensional?Potok also reviews the history of Jewish grave markers. The first tombstone ismentioned in Genesis, when Jacob places a monument at Rachel\'s grave.Schwartzman uses the centuries of vandalism of Jewish cemeteries to detail thepersecution Jews have suffered. Many of the communities recorded on tombstonesin this book have ceased to exist. I am glad these beautiful carvings wererecorded before they too disappear.
