Description.....Welcome to my sale! You are considering a fine pair of late 19c Chinese carved soapstone blank seals with both seals being worked from the same block of material showing a fabulous coloring and figure to the stone with a great surface patina. This pair of seals were produced in China during the later part of the 19c in which I would say were done during the 1890s to perhaps around 1910 but in the Qing dynasty for export to the West. These are considered a mirrored pair as they are made with the rooster looking to the left on one and to the right of the other or facing each other and not both facing the same way. The subject matter of the seals contain a superbly carved rooster with its breast touching a flowering prunus branch while standing on a well pierced group of rockery with the most special little pair of toads or frogs having one\'s full body stretching out over the rockery with its front leg touching the front leg of the second frog which is hiding in the rockery with all this being worked onto a pillar type stand that is completely covered with incising of lotus plants and a full figural portrait amoungst a cloud background to each side of the pillar. The bottoms were never finished leaving it blank showing much surface ear from moving it about for over 100 years. This pair is not something that is seen very often so if you collect Chinese soapstone carvings or seals then these are a must for the collector.
Condition....Overall excellent with a few small flakes between both at the corners or edge to the bottom half of the pillars and a few natural veins and as mentioned the bottoms have wear from moving about otherwise great.
