For sale...EXCEPTIONAL CHINESE BOXLarge, stunning and rare Chinese carved sandalwood and huanghuali box. Late Qing dynasty. The depth and detail of the carving is truly breath taking. The hinged cover depicts a military scene involving French troops at Tonkin and Hanoi - most unusual for this type of box. The side and back panels depict more traditional Chinese hunting and fishing scenes. The framework of the lid and the nicely carved base are huanghuali wood - again very unusual. I\'ve included numerous photos above and below. This is an extremely rare piece of Chinese art.Viewing welcome by appointment at our Preston showroom.
Measurements: Width 340mm (13 1/2\"). Depth 195mm (7 3/4\"). Height 165mm.
Condition Report: In superb order. One very small shrinkage crack to top, a few minor nibbles and possibly later hinges.
