Faberge Imperial Hen Egg Yellow Enamel Guilloche w/ Gold Egg Necklace

Created by Fabergé at the request of Tsar Alexander III in 1885, this is the very first of the Imperial Eggs. Alexander ascended the throne after his father\'s assassination in 1881. In 1885, having been married to Maria Fedorovna for twenty years, he ordered this Egg to commemorate the anniversary of their betrothal in 1865 and also to serve as her Easter gift.

The current Fabergé reproduction of The Hen Egg is yellow enamel guilloché cradled in a tri-legged gilt stand decorated with laurel leaf swags.
When the top of the egg is removed the dome of the golden yolk is seen. Open the yolk and there, nestled in a velvet bed, is a tiny golden hen with ruby eyes. This minute bird is hinged at the tail and opens revealing the final surprise -- a half inch enamel guilloché egg set with two diamonds ready to be worn on it\'s own delicate golden chain.

  • Store display piece.
  • The egg is in excellent condition.
  • Some small scratch marks on the rim of the egg.
  • Discoloration on material inside egg where hen sits (probably from tarnish while in storage).
  • Some slight scuff marks on the exterior.
  • This piece is no longer available to the public.
  • Comes in blue gift box with white satin lining and blue outer box (both show some light wear)

The Fabergé family originated in France but was forced to leave the country due to religious persecution. During the 18th century, the family settled in Russia. Peter Carl Fabergé was born on May 30, 1846, the son of a goldsmith. After apprenticing with several master goldsmiths in Germany, France and England, Peter Carl Fabergé returned to St. Petersburg a highly accomplished craftsman. In 1885, Peter Carl Faberge presented the first Imperial Egg to Czar Alexander III and soon became the most famous jeweler in the world.
