Faberge Kelkn Pine Cone Egg Indian Elephant & Pendant Surprise Blue Enameled Guilloche
This egg was originally made for Varvara Kelkh, a wealthy Russian heiress, who commissioned seven Easter eggs which rivaled in importance and beauty those given to Empress Alexandra Ferorovna. In fact, over the years, the Kelkh Easter eggs have, on occasions, been identified and sold as Imperial eggs. This egg is composed of overlapping disks enameled translucent blue over a guilloche ground with more than 1000 individually set Austrian crystals. The egg’s surprise is a miniature elephant that, when opened reveals its own surprise, a cobalt blue egg pendant.

The Fabergé family originated in France but was forced to leave the country due to religious persecution. During the 18th century, the family settled in Russia. Peter Carl Fabergé was born on May 30, 1846, the son of a goldsmith. After apprenticing with several master goldsmiths in Germany, France and England, Peter Carl Fabergé returned to St. Petersburg a highly accomplished craftsman. In 1885, Peter Carl Faberge presented the first Imperial Egg to Czar Alexander III and soon became the most famous jeweler in the world.
