While living in Greenwich Village in the sixties I knew of a little store off Bleecker that specialized in underground comics. Every Friday afternoon after work, I’d go there to see what was the latest version just hitting the shelves, from Wilson, Griffin, Moscoso, Williams, Shelton or Crumb. With several of my hippy friends grooving, and laughing over Mr. Natural, Yellow Dog or the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, we’d sit around that smoke filled room, sometimes late into the night.

Fast forward, some fifty years later – my wife and I discovered some old cardboard boxes hidden behind junk in the back of our storage locker. It was a dry, cool place and the hundreds of underground comics that had only been read once, were in beautiful condition. It felt like we discovered a pot of gold.

We wrote to dozens of book and comic stores with a list of our inventory. They said, there was no interest, no market and offered us little to nothing. We explained to them that these were complete sets, first editions: Zap Comix, Young Lust, Weirdo, Snatch, Slow Death, Rip Off Comix, Hup, Fantagor, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Cherry Poptart, Bizarre Sex, Arcade Comic Revue, just to name a few. To the retail outlets they were worthless, but to us they were priceless.

Now we offer them on and the collectors are grabbing them up, at our more than reasonable prices. Gilbert Shelton story, cover and art

The debut of the first Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic book came years after Gilbert Shelton had already popularized the characters through countless appearances in underground newspapers across the country (and the world). The comic strips that appear in this issue were culled from Freak Brothers strips Shelton had produced for various publications, including the L.A. Free Press. The majority of stories here are one-pagers, but there are a few multi-page stories, including \"The Freaks Pull A Heist\" and \"The Freak Brothers Go To College,\" both memorable and funny tales.

The first issue proved to be enormously popular, selling about half a million copies in its first ten printings (over about three years). Back in the day, virtually every pot-smoking comic fan had a bong-water-soaked copy of this comic book stashed somewhere in their disheveled apartment.
