This is a fabulous large antique victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate and Cairngorm foil backed citrine brooch in exquisite condition.This is a rare piece with a central silver engraved dome inset with a multitude of stunning Scottish gemstones all in lovely condition. I have not seen a piece with this type of dome before and it makes this piece extra special!
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stunning stones are firstly a facetted central golden citrine from the Cairngorm mountain range and complimenting foil backed citrines also from the Cairngorms, that have been fully tested by a local jeweller and are genuine stones. The remaining agates are breathtaking, with outer raised carved carnelians from Glenfarg in Perthshire, classic grey banded Montrose agates and green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum. The central dome stones are all beautifully inset with rage gold and green moss agates from Burn Anne in Ayrshire, orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire, grey banded Montrose agates and Isle of Rum bloodstones.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces from this period but has been fully tested by a local jeweller and is sterling silver. The width is huge at 5.6 cm ( Two and a quarter inches ) and the C clasp and pin are in good working condition and original as is the loop on the back to fit a safety chain if required. The brooch has initials AH engraved on the back.
