Here is an authentic and fine looking Kachina from about 1940 (1935-1945), a HOPI POLIK (PHOLIK, POLICK,PALHIK, PHALIK...) MANA KACHINA, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION FOR AGE - A WELL CARVED / PAINTED NATIVE AMERICAN COTTONWOOD KATSINA CARVING. A very collectible and OLD Hopi Katsina Doll, which is made from Cottonwood. This Kachina was made by an expert HOPI maker, and is is part of my extensive personal collection which Iwill beseeing some of during 2018.

This is afine looking POLIK OR PHALIK MANA KACHINA MAIDEN , great overall workmanship, with original paints and accoutrements, and expert overall carving. She is made from Cottonwood standing at about 11 3/4\" tall, and 4\" wide at hands . There is some expected wear to paint (see photo of the back of Kachina due to being against wall and movement - was in Hopi home), and feathers, yet overall this Kachina is in Excellent Condition for age (there is one crack at left elbow, and right hand index finger is chipped)! All accoutrements and paints are original. This Kachina, as you can see from the pics, displays extremely well and is a handsome and collectible piece of Native America - She is a less common style of the POLIK-MANA MAIDEN KACHINA - Uncommon to see one this old of this style!!!

The body is carved from a piece of the traditional Cottonwood - a tree that grows in washes and canyons where water is more consistent.

Polik-mana(POE-lick MA-nah) orButterfly Maidenis akachina, or spirit being, inHopimythology. Every spring she dances from flower to flower, pollinating the fields and flowers and bringing life-giving rain to the Arizona desert. She is represented by a woman dancer at the yearly Butterfly Dance, a traditional initiation rite for Hopi girls. The rite takes place in late summer, before the harvest, to give thanks to Polik-mana for her spring dance.Hopi girls participating in the Butterfly Dance wear ornate headdresses called kopatsoki.

THE LOSS OF PAINT ON THE BACK OF THE KACHINA IS ETHNOGRAPHIC WEAR DUE TO THE BACK RUBBING ON THE WALL OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME - IT WAS USED AS A WALL HANGER IN A HOPI HOME MOST LIKELY. JB
