This newspaper is an authentic piece of Civil War history. It is the evening edition of the Boston Daily Journal from February 6th, 1864. The paper is in good condition. There are some small dark spots throughout the paper, but no more than might be expected on a 150 year old newspaper. The Civil War tokens are neat pieces of history as well. Included in this lot are 2 copper tokens, both struck in 1863. The first is a Patriotic Token. The obverse reads \"Liberty and no slavery.\" The reverse features the Union shield and other time-honored symbols of peace and liberty. The second token in this lot is a Trade Token, advertising a coffee company operated by a Mr. John Thomas Jr. in Albany New York. Both tokens are chocolate brown and have some wear evident.

Civil War Tokens can be found from the very narrow window of 1862 through 1864. The tokens generally fall into one of two categories. There are Patriotic pieces, which typically feature a motivational or satirical slogan. And there are also Store Card tokens, or Trade Tokens. These tokens were issued by the merchants who were represented on the coins\' surfaces. When the economic troubles began in the Union during the Civil War, the United States government first attempted a correction by simply issuing unsupported paper money. When this and other attempts failed to assuage the pressure in the economy, the government resorted to allowing the production and circulation of privately minted tokens. In mid-1864, Congress stepped back in and passed legislation banning the use of privately minted coinage.
