$590.00

A finely carved ancient Egyptian steatite scarab beetle amulet, dating to the Late Period, 663 - 332 BC.

Naturalisticallycarved, the oval body with head, legs and wing caseclearly depicted. Pierced longitudinally in antiquity for attachment to a collar or necklace. The inscription on the base is particularly fine, depicting a neferand rabbit, translating as:

Un Nefer

\"Beautiful Existence\"

The scarab (kheper) beetle was one of the most popular amulets in ancient Egypt because the insect was a symbol of both rebirth and the sun god Ra. Ancient Egyptians were highly superstitious, and amulets such as this were worn and treasured as conduits to sympathetic magic, used to attract power and protection.

The quality of craftsmanship on this example is excellent. In appreciating the detail achieved by an artisan working on such a small scale we can see how these objects were not merely talismans, they were miniature works of art. This fascinating piece also has a firm provenance, having formerly been saleed at Christie\'s London in 1969.
