This is a very old miniature on fine white porcelain and is markedwith the old style impression of C.M. Hutschenreuther. Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) started his factory in1814 in Northern Bavaria in Hohenberg Ander Eger. He previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain factory in Lichte (Wallendorf). After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna and her two sons. From 1860, they produced hand -painted gilded porcelains.

In 1814, Carolus discovered deposits of kaolin, used to make fine white porcelain, near the River Eger and decided to manufacture porcelain in Hohenberg, where a relative of his, Ernst Ludwig ReuB, was chief forester. ReuB made space for him in Hohenberg castle, and he began painting porcelain there and learning to manufacture it. On 10 September 1816, he appliedfor permission to establish a porcelain manufacturing factory in Hohenberg: the concession was granted on 7 November 1822. Initially , Carolus appears to have personally mixed the raw materials and overseen the firing, to guard knowledge of the process. He was also probably responsible for most of the painting and shipping.

This is one of the earlier Hutschenreuther creations and bears the old style impression with the shield and C.M.H.R. After his death the factory switched to a glazed mark in about 1845. There is a good chance that this fine miniature was actually fired and painted by Carolus and these old examples are getting hard to acquire. The painting is housed in a nice frame that can be set used as either on a table or hung on the wall.
