Fine Quality Sterling Silver Vinaigrette by William Simpson
Superb Condition and Hallmarked Birmingham 1829
A superb example of a Georgian Solid Silver Vinaigrette by the highly respected Birmingham Silversmith WilliamSimpson(please see the detailed close-upphotographs provided, which form an integral part of the item\'s description).
This superb Vinaigrette demonstrates the fine quality craftsmanship of this Silversmith; the hand chased decoration andthe detailing on each side of the box is testimony to the skill of its maker. This fine quality Vinaigrette is in superb and original condition (I have not attempted to clean it as I am aware many collectors prefer toundertakethat task or leave the item in its original condition).
The Vinaigrette has no damage that I can see otherthan a couple of bruises that are wholly commensurate with age and use.The lid, which has a cartouche engravedwith a monogram has a good strong hinge and it opens and closes as it should.
On opening the lid it becomes apparent that most of the interior gilding has survived intact and that thepierced& gilded grilleis also beautifully finished with hand chased foliate engraving of the highest quality (please see photographs); the grilleopens and closes as it should.
The Vinaigrette has the following dimensions:
Length; approx\' 34mm
Width: approx\' 22mm
Height: approx\' 10mm
Weight: 13.6 grams
It has the following hallmarks:
On the inside of the lid - Profile ofGeorgeIV; Maker\'s Mark - \'WS\' for William Simpson; Lion Passant - Sterling Silver
On the base of the vinaigrette - Town Mark - \'Anchor\' for Birmingham; Maker\'s Mark -\'WS\' for William Simpson; Date Letter - \'F\' for 1829
