DESCRIPTION: Openwork handles with sprung firebox on OldSheffield Plate Tray

HALLMARKS:London 1808 by Wilkes Booth. The finger rings of both handles are appropriately part marked.

MEASUREMENTS: Tray: 24.8cm long x 9.8cm wide (9.75”x3.8”); Snuffers: 12.2cm (4.8”) long

This is a fine pair ofGeorgian silver handled candlesnuffers (aka wick trimmers) on its original OldSheffield Plate tray. The silver handles of the snuffers are reeded and this isrepeated around the border of the tray.

The tray is superbly engravedwith a Coat-of-Arms for the Ashby family, including a lion rampant crest and the snuffers bears thematching engraved crest.

The condition is superbthroughout with a desirable amount of copper bleeding to the underside edges ofthe tray.

The steel firebox/wick trimmerhas a superb Pinchbeck patent spring action box that close with a resoundingsnap. Opening the snuffers cocks the mechanism and closing them raises thespring shutter which snaps back down to trap the wick when the snuffers arefully closed.

The pointed end of the toolcan be used to dig out the wick from the solidified wax prior to it beingre-lit. Wilkes Booth was the finest specialist maker of this essential Georgianlighting accessory.
