Portrait of a Gentleman, Circa 1700 French
Large late 17th early 18th century portrait of a gentleman, oil on canvas. A fine large portrait of a wealth gentleman wearing a grey coat with gold brocade, red mantle, and a high parted wig tied at the bottom (popular from 1680 to about 1720). The immensely expensive wig and attire are testament to the sitter’s wealth. The overall style and type of portrait is typically French. This large portrait is from the circle of Nicolas de Largilliere who was commissioned by various aristocratic and noble individuals and was one of the most prominent French portraitists of the day. Presented in a good condition antique gilt frame, and ready to hang.
Good lined condition particularly for it’s circa 300 years of age, craquelure.

Nicolas de Largillière (1656-1746) was born in Paris France and trained in Antwerp. Around 1674 he went to London and was befriended by Sir Peter Lely. His work caught the attention of Charles II, a fervent collector of the arts. Charles II, and subsequently King James II, had planned to retain Largilliere for further commissions and even offered him the prestigious position of keeper of the Royal Collection, but he eventually returned to Paris and continued to paint various aristocratic and noble individuals.
