Fine Museum Quality 19th CENTURY NORTHWEST COAST CARVED, PAINTED CANOE & PADDLE
When you take a look at the second picture, you will see the natural quality of this carved wood sculpture, patina and painted surface. The other pics have lighting which allow you to see the piece clearly, such as the detail work of designs, carved and painted canoe and paddle, three wood pegged thwarts, and twine holding paddle on thwart. The painted surface of paddle is a perfect match to the painted surface of canoe - intense red and black. There is an old Collection Tag at the bottom and a vintage handwritten note with foxing.
The canoe has beautiful old red painted trim work around the entire top railing. Overall excellent condition with only minimal old wood loss at one end which doesnt effect design that has been patinated and smoothed over by a hundred years of time. Finely carved cedar. 19" Length. Circa 1880. Probably Haida.
This Haida Model Dugout Canoe and Paddle have full painted surface on both sides. There is a similar example, not as detailed as this example I am selling, at the Alaska State Museum - search Collections. The matching Paddle of this one is an especially nice addition and is unusual to find still attached to canoe. In person, this carving glows with warmth. Again, revisit that second pic to get a sense of its depth. Provenance: from an Ohio Collection. A very rare find.
