This beautiful soft cover book measures approximately 7 1/4\" x 5 1/4\". It has the original stitched binding (later editions were stapled) and is from the Elson-Gray Reading Series, which has since become known as the Dick and Jane Series. Note that the cover of this early firstedition refers to the Life-Reading Service. In the later editions from 1936 on, this was changed to the Curriculum Foundation Series.
This book is copyright 1930 and published by Scott, Foresman and Company. It was written and edited by the famous co-creators of Dick and Jane: William H. Elson and William S. Gray.
This book was the first of the Elson Reading Series to ever include the actual characters named Dick and Jane. Though the title page denotes that this book is a \"revision of the Elson Pupil\'s Hand Chart copyright 1921, 1927,\" that early Elson softcover hand chart (pre-primer) did not include Dick and Jane nor any of the same stories or illustrations found in this pre-primer.
As you can see, the illustrations of the times are adorable! The stories are wonderful too! Please note the cover scan at the left is of this actual book. The rest are stock photos of illustrations shown in this book.
These are the original Mother, Father, Dick, Jane, Baby (who is later named Sally in the 1940 pre-primer), Grandmother, the dog, Spot (who is a terrier in the 1930s and a cocker spaniel in later editions), and the cat, Little Mew (who in later editions is called Puff).

This is a very hard to find book with the original Dick and Jane characters. Dick, Jane, Baby Sally, Spot, Puff, Mother and Father would all be redone, revised and updated over the next thirty-five years. (The last Dick and Jane pre-primer was published in 1965.) But the ones in this reader were the very first!
This very hard-to-find book would make a wonderful addition to ANY rare book collection or family library!
Or it would be a nice UNIQUE GIFT for a children\'s book collector - or a teacher!
CONDITION DETAILS:

this wonderful treasure is
inVERY GOOD + condition!
The cover is in cleancondition with no creases at all. The binding tapeis still firm and secure. The string binding is tight and also secure. There is a name written on the inside front cover. Thereare no school stamps or stickers.
The inside pages are in clean condition with a few light smudges and some yellowing from age. There areno bends or tears. Thereis no writing at all and there are no children\'s scribbles. The illustrations are very vivid and clear.
