Here are five very good items dug in Charles City County about a mile east of Berkeley Plantation on Route 609. We spent many hours relic hunting on 609 and it was a great producer of both Union and Confederate items. I have seen four or five nice OVM buckles found on 609, and about three miles further north plenty of Confederate buttons have been dug. As you can see the items listed here include a lead backed bullseye rosette, a nice brass heel plate, a US saddle shield off a 12 inch seat saddle, a nice cuff staff New York state seal button with considerable gold and a complete Spencer carbine just as dug with casing. The saddle shield was bent when found and one side has been straightened although it has a crack. Above the 12\" seat across the top is stamped a number 2. These items were found over fifteen years ago. Very little relic hunting is allowed on this route now.
Items of this type and quality are hard to come by today. Of course I still love getting out hunting for them, but I have really seen such a big difference in what we find compared to those early days. It\'s very disappointing. I believe the easiest way to add these things to your collection is from or other sites, although not quite as much fun. Not as much gas used for sure and quicker.
