Pterodactylus from the Greek meaning \"winged finger\" is a genus of pterosaurs,whose members are popularly known as pterodactyls. It was the first tobe named and identified as a flying reptile. Its fossil remains havebeen found primarily in the Solnhofen limestone of Bavaria, Germany, dated tothe late JurassicPeriod(early Tithonian),though more fragmentary remains have been identified from elsewhere in Europe and in Africa. It was a carnivore andprobably preyed upon fish and other small animals. Like all pterosaurs, thewings of Pterodactylus were formed by a skin and muscle membranestretching from its elongated fourth finger to its hind limbs.
