Franz Liszt Recommends a Pianist Autograph Note Signed 1883:
$1400.00

Today Franz Liszt (1811-1886) is generally best remembered as an inventive composer, but in his time he was first recognized as a piano virtuoso and was considered among the best pianists ever to play. In addition to performing, composing, and conducting, Liszt taught piano and was a benefactor to other 19th century musical luminaries such as Wagner and Berlioz.

In this autograph note signed, written in German, to Liszt\'s friend and colleague Leopold Damrosch, he recommends one of his students, Miss Neally Stevens, as \"an excellent pianist.\" The note measures 4\" x 6\" and is framed with a rather striking portrait of Liszt to 16 3/4\" x 12 3/4\". The note is translated into English in pencil on the dust cover on verso: \"Friend Damrosch, Recommend an excellent pianist Miss Neally Stevens. Yours devoutedly, F. Liszt Aug. \'83 Weimer\".

Condition: One vertical fold line and though it has not been taken out of its framing, the note is definitely laid onto another, slightly larger, sheet of paper. There is light staining that is undoubtedly due to bleed through from whatever adhesive technique was used. It is hard to determine if the pencil signed etching is laid down, but it appears, if it is, it is just at the blank margins. Generally very good.
