American sterling silver footed fruit or bread basket by William Gale Jr. of New York City, date marked 1866.This unusual and attractive basket has a twisted wire work oval body set on a conforming pedestal base, both of which have applied knife and dart borders. The top border has attached keyhole swing handles.The sides of the basket have applied sheet silver Union shields, one of which is monogrammed, in ornate, period script: CHPThis most unusual basket weighs 500 grams and is 10 1/2\\\" long, 8 3/4\\\" wide and 5 1/4\\\" tall. The handles are 2\\\" long and 1 1/8\\\" wide.We like ths very much and so will you.Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
