GORGEOUS SET OF JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD CLOISONNE FLORAL AND FAN MOTIF BELT BUCKLES

A wonderful and gorgeous pair of early Japanese cloisonne floral and fan motif belt buckles. Circa 1910, the Meiji Period. They measure 3\" wide by 1 7/8\" high and weigh 1.092 ounces or 30.96 grams. The buckles are done with a brass yusen on a light blue ground. These were made by filling the compartments with colored glass, which they were then backed and fired to create the enamel filling. They will build several layers of enamel, which are applied and backed to build up the compartments until the surface is flush or even. The end result is a gorgeous colorful motif. With this motif, the enamel is a floral and fan design done in beautiful colors of blues, greens, black, reds, purple, yellows and pinks. The outer edge is done in a scalloped brass frame with the back being done with a green enamel. The cloisonne definition is enamel work in which colored areas are separated by thin metal bands fixed edgewise to the ground and the origin is French. Cloisonne is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects in recent Centuries using vitreous enamel and in older periods, inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials. The enamel works are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which needs to then be fired in a kiln. This set is in great condition. They are stunning! What a great addition to add to a buckle collection, but more over for any cloisonne collector. On all of our items, insurance is mandatory and is included in the Handling Cost. We tried to make this easier on our customers, as does not prompt for an insurance amount. We will break it down for you upon end of sale in the invoice. We ship out Priority Mail or if this is an International purchase, Priority Mail International to protect you with your purchases and get them to you fast. As most people know, these pieces become more beautiful with age because of movements and distress in the woods, some having restoration. Spindle turnings will not be uniform and swell unevenly with age. Wood tends to get stress fractures on support systems and where wide board construction is used. Eighty-five percent of 18th Century veneers have had some restoration during their life. Pine secondary woods might fracture, making overlays and veneers have the same fracture lines. Old finishes might alligator, fade, fish-eye or darken depending on where the pieces were placed. All of these are desired by a true collector and gives it personality. Do not expect these early pieces to be like new. These pieces age gracefully just as we do, giving them unique personality. We do our best to describe and photograph all items thoroughly, but handle a quantity of pieces every day and might miss something. All these antique pieces are sold as is. It is your responsibility to view the photos, review the description, if you wish photos of a specific area on any piece, we are happy to promptly submit them to you and ask any questions you may have before offerding. Selling items untouched, usually directly from Estates, we are not experts on clock works or any items with mechanical or moving parts.
