  • Old Gullah sweetgrass basket from Charleston, Lowcountry --one of the oldest in my personal collection. I\'d guess maybe 1970s, give or take, very hard for me to tell, and it could be older. It has evidence of storage dust and the color is on the drab side rather than the golden yellow we see in new baskets. The coils are very tight and thin, another indication of an earlier basket.
  • For an older basket, it is pretty intact, but of course I do see some broken and missing palmetto fronds but it is still tight. See photos.
  • Oval shape with two handles. Measures Measures 11-1/2\" handle to handle, the body is 8\" wide, and 2-1/2\" high.
  • I like to show a lot of pictures so buyers get an idea of exactly what they are getting. Over time, some of the bullrush/palmetto fronds do get dry and can split. See pictures.
  • Probably for bread and rolls. You can swish it in soapy water and rinse to remove dust without harming the basket if you want to use it unlined for food
  • Absolutely genuine and correct -- lots of look alike imports, but usually do not have the pine straw, the palmetto and course the real sweetgrass. The starting knot is another clue to the real thing. See photos.
  • Marshes are disappearing with encroaching development in the Route 17 Mt. Pleasant area where the makers have lived with their families for generations which makes the raw materials harder to source..
  • It\'s a hard craft -- time consuming and rough on the hands. I consider it one of the last true expressions of folk art in the US. Only found in the coastal south and hand crafted by descendants of the slaves who worked the plantations and rice fields.
  • See for yourself! I have a few other baskets listed, and happily combine shipping.
  • Ships at 3 lbs., well protected. Your choice of carriers, but priority probably works the best and fastest.
