A very fine and unusual George III solid silver Book Vinaigrette. The vinaigrette is rectangular form, with \'Souvenir\' written in raised lettering across the lid, and engraved decoration on the front and back. The vinaigrette is fashioned as a book showing the leaves of the book on the sides. In the centre on the back is engraved \'W C G\'. The lid opens to reveal a gilded pierced grille, with floral design. There are hallmarks on the top of the inside of the lid, on the underside of the grille and on the inside of the bottom, all very clear. The whole of the inside is gilded. The grille hinges backwards, and not to the side. A very unusual design.
Hallmarks: The vinaigrette is English sterling silver hallmarked for London 1817. The hallmarks are very clear .The inside of the bottom is hallmarked with makers mark \'D.H\', Lion Passant, Leopard Head Crowned, date letter \'b\' and the Georgian tax Mark. The lid and grille are hallmarked with the makers mark \'D.H\', Lion Passant and date letter \'b\'. The maker\'s mark \'D.H\' refers to the London silversmith Daniel Hockley. The vinaigrette is also marked with French import marks.
Dimensions: It is 3.6cm long, 2.7cm wide, and 0.9cm high. It weighs c26g
Condition: The hinge closes securely, and the hallmarks are clear.
