Superb Georgian sterling silver tankard, fully hallmarked for London 1753.
This is a beautiful silver tankard made in the reign of King George II by Thomas Whipham in London 1753.The tankard is of classic balluster shape with a flared top rim above gently curving sides and it stands on a spreading round pedestal base.
The body of the tankard has superb high relief chased horses - mare and her foal - standing in a field with trees and buildings to the background.
The tankard has a large vacant cartouche surrounded by trees.
The tankard has a tapering scroll handle with leaf thumbpiece.
The tankard is 5 inches / 127 mm wide to the back of the handle, 3-3/4 inches / 96 mm in diametre at the base and it stands 4-7/8 inches / 124 mm high.
Made of thick gauge silver, the tankard weighs an impressive 348 grams.
The underside has clear hallmarks - lion passant, London mark, letter t for 1753 and maker\'s mark TW for Thomas Whipham.
The tankardis in excellent condition with no dents, damage or repair.
