DUTCH, ENGLISH orCONTINENTAL SCHOOL, Circa Mid-19th Century: European Grand TourHeidelberg Castle Germany Subject Romantic Italianate InfluencedStreet ScenePainting, oil on canvas laid down on older masonite panel, 11 x9 inches (trimmed slightly irregularly), (12 13/16 x 10 11/16 x 1 3/16 inches framed),signed with partially legible signature monogram perhaps \"? S.\" lower right in red. Bronze gilt frame molding with paperboard backing (both circa pre-WWII).

Provenance:

One of over a dozen original period oils recently acquired at a Florida Gulf Coast liquidation sale, the owner formerly of upstate New York.

Condition:

In fairly sound for its age as discovered in a Florida Gulf Coast liquidation sale condition. Canvas trimmed slightly irregularly and laid down on an older pre-WWII masonite panel. Appears to be an old conservation with fine craquelure consolidated by pre-War panel mounting. In last approximately 75 years has acquired surface dirt, darkened varnish and also edge flaking from rabbet wear plus a few tiny flakes within the composition. Cursory brown overpaint along the far right panel edge to mask the visible sliver of masonite. Requires conservation, as found. Frame gessoed gilt has chips, scattered wear and some spotting requiring attention - also dusty. Backing paperboard acidified with tattered tape. Nicely impastoed highlights in trees and deftly rendered miniature figures at center of composition reveals an accomplished hand.
