Greek South Italy, Hellenistic Period, IV-III century B.C. A rare Canosan Krater pottery with mouth, tall cylindrical neck, ovoid body, circular foot and over-arching handle, remaining of painted decoration : three circular lines in the inferior part of the body.
Canosa was an ancient Greek south Italian colony that produced magnificent unglazed wares in the 4th-3rd Century BC. Canosan pottery was more subtly decorated than contemporary Apulian wares, with Canosan artists making use of pastel colored pigments and smooth, elegant ceramic forms. It combines polychrome decoration, much of which has faded leaving behind only the white ground, and coroplastic (terracotta) additions, consisting of groups of figures in the round and appliques of relief heads. Canosan pottery derives its name from the tomb complex at Canosa, where most examples of this type of vase were excavated, but its exact center of production is still unknown. The predominate view is that these vases were made along the Adriatic coast, in the artistic centers of either Daunia of Messapia, as both were cultural crossroads that may explain the Egyptian-Alexandrian style of clothing worn by the Nike figurines. Apulia, covering the region of the \'heel\' of Italy, was the closest part of Italy to Greece, but despite Greek influence, local culture was strongly maintained from the Bronze Age through to Roman times. The wealth of some of the population is reflected in the hypogea, vast underground chamber-tombs in which most of the surviving local pottery has been found.
