FROM 1901 ENLISTMENT, TO CAPTAIN OF EAGLE BOAT #12, WORLD WAR I ERA, 1920. THE U.S.N WAS THIS MAN\'S LIFE. This terrific early volume was kept by United States Navy career man, William Arthur Fulkerson, who\'s first handwritten entry is \"Enlisted March 20th, 1901, at Chicago, Illinois and was sent to the Training Station at Newport, Rhode Island; was transferred from Training Station to the Training Ship Essex, Aug 22nd, 1901. S. Minneapolis to the U. S. S. Columbia, July 19th, 1902, at New York.\" And this 83 page, handwritten log book, entails every ship this man served on; when he was transferred to another ship; every port they sailed to; every day they anchored; how long they remained in port; and the day and time of departure. Everything was recorded by William Arthur Fulkerson, in this surreal handwritten book wherein he wrote daily for 19 years. He enlisted as a seaman in 1901 and worked his way up to rank of Commander and Captain, without attending any Naval Academy. Here was a self made man, who, during his Navy career would be discharged and reenlist the next day without ever getting off the ship. His writing is precise, and meticulous, and this diary, this log book of his career is a handwritten work that is a very worthy acquisition indeed. [Please see additional scans after listing.]He served on the U.S.S. Essex; U.S.S. Minneapolis; U.S.S. Dolphin; U.S.S. Columbia; U.S.S. Lancaster; U.S.S. On November 16, 1919 Fulkerson was to Command/Captain the U.S.S. Eagle Boat #12. [This was changed to PE-1, or 2,3,4, in 1920.]He has several historical notations that are extremely interesting to include; While on the U.S.S. Dolphin, October 22, 1901, \"Took Crown Prince of Siam to West Point and Return.\" \"January 11, 1903. Outside covers show shelf wear, corners are scuffed. Handwritten log book is a treasure. Oddly enough, for a man so precise, Fulkerson did not sign this book, however, records definitively identify Fulkerson as the writer of this work.
