Herbert Hoover - Typed Letter Signed 02/19/1940 For Sale

HERBERT HOOVER
Former President Hoover does not give permission to use his name to sell stock and if it is used he will call it fraud.
Typed Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover," 1p, 7¼x10½. The Waldorf Astoria, New York City, 1940 February 19. The former 31stU.S. President writes to Lawrence K. Requa, Weiser, Idaho. In full: "With regard to the use of the Hoover name, the statement of the lawyer of this company to the local S.E.C. has about enough to damn it. I think I shall take it up with the S.E.C. through a mutual friend. In any event, if they ever sell a share of stock to a mortal soul I will denounce the whole thing as a fraud, and I don't think they will sell much afterwards. And if they could know this it might be of interest to them. It will not be helpful to the sale of stock when I am done with it." Attempts to use presidents' names, including that of Hoover, to make a profit were not uncommon. Hoover, however, was a modest man who did not want anyone to profit by using his name to sell a product. Two file holes in upper blank margin, else fine.
