Description:

An extremely fine quality carved oval walnut panel, within a similarlybeautifully carved ebony frame, depicting a man on a horse - reputed to beGaribaldi. The central scene was carved by, and is fully signed 'LuigiFrullini, di Firenze 1860'.

The detail in the carving is exceptional, and the wood has adopted afine aged sheen and patina. The paper label to the back reads:

Background:

Luigi Frullini was initially trained byhis father Agostina Frullini, a wood carver. When he was 12, he was enrolled inthe Fine Arts Academy of Florence for a drawing class, most likely under thedirection of Alessandro Maffei. Between 1853 and 1856, he studied with theFlorentine drawing master Giuseppe Benelli. After his father’s death in 1856,he took an apprenticeship with the cabinetmaker Barbetti.

He opened his own studio 1859.From that moment on Frullini’scareer took off. At the age of 26, he became honorary professor at the fineArts Academy of Florence, a rare distinction for someone so young.From thevery beginning, Frullini developed a unique decorative style and is well knownfor his amazing animal motifs.

Condition:

In very good condition with no noticeable damage or restoration. There is one tinyhole visible to the front of the frame. The rider may always have had a dagger at his side, or it may have once been a sword and has lost its end. Please see the images providedwhich complement this description.
