A valuable history from Coggeshall, who spent most of his life at sea, commanded privateers during the War of 1812, and informs his text with his personal experiences. \"Plainly, often baldly, told, but trustworthy and readable with all most so when Capt. Coggeshall writes of the exploits of the David Porter and the Leo, which he commanded\" - Larned. Illustrated with lithographic plates of various naval battles and ships at sea, and with a useful index and an appendix listing the names of privateers, their captains, and their home ports.
