Riders on Magnificent White Lippizaner Stallions

-----------

The Lippizaner Horse

The oldest human bred horse in the world, ancestors of the Lipizzaners, have been traced to Carthaginian and Roman horses at the time Julius Caesar was Emperor of Rome.

The Lipizzaner breed itself dates back to around 1562 when Archduke Maximilian started to breed Spanish horses in Lipica, a village in the modern day Slovenia. It was the need for military horses of unusual strength, loyalty and courage that inspired him to import Spanish, Italian and Arab-Oriental horses for his breeding programme. Out of this grew the famous white horse – the Lipizzaner – as we know it today.

These animals are characterised by a perfect and noble physique, graceful movements, the ability to learn, liveliness, good nature, courage, toughness and stamina. In appearance they resemble in every respect the typical baroque show and parade horses..

The history of Lipizzaner horse is linked with an umbilical cord to the one of the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The School dates back 430 years to the revival of the \'Haute Ecole d\'Equitation\' at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries, as the Renaissance was sweeping through the royal courts of Europe. Horses of Spanish origin were chosen over other breeds for characteristics they possessed which made them especially suitable for classical training. Spanish Riding School of Vienna is the only riding academy in the world where the Renaissance tradition of classical horsemanship is preserved and cultivated to this day. The unique harmony of horse and rider achieved here is famous all over the world.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Lipizzans are genetically a type of grey. Born dark, black-brown, brown, or mouse-grey, Lipizzans gradually lighten until the white coat for which they are noted is produced somewhere between the ages of 6 and 10. The white hair coat has become dominant in the breed, and only now and then is a black or brown adult produced. As late as two hundred years ago, black, browns, chestnuts, duns, piebalds, and skewbalds were found in the adult herd. Noted for his sturdy body and proud carriage, the Lipizzan’ head is remarkable for its large appealing eyes and has a straight or slightly convex profile. The jaw is deep, the ears small, the eyes large and expressive and the nostrils flared.

The body presents a picture of strength with a sturdy crested neck, powerful shoulders, withers that are low, muscular and broad, muscular hind quarters, and strong legs with well-defined tendons and joints. The feet tend to be small, but are tough. The tail is carried high and well set.

Not an exceedingly tall horse, the Lipizzan averages between 14.2 to 15.2 hands.

Lipizzan horses tend to mature slowly. However, they live and are active longer than many other breeds, with horses performing the difficult exercises of the Spanish Riding School well into their 20s and living into their 30s.

Young stallions come to the Spanish Riding School for training when they are four years old. Full training takes an average of six years for each horse, and schooling is considered complete when they have mastered the \"School Quadrille\".
