A bit about myacademic credentials... I am a Professor of Cultural Anthropology; a National Geographic SocietyExplorer-in-Residence; a Consultant Officer for Civil Affairs for the UNStabilization Mission in Haiti (Civilian Grade, P-5); and DistinguishedVisiting Anthropologist and Ethnologist-in-Residence in the Bureau of Ethnologyat the National University of Haiti. I am regarded within the field ofanthropology and among Haitianist cultural scholars as the foremost academicauthority of Haitian society and cultural tradition. I routinely publish myresearch findings in peer-reviewed, scholarly international and US journals ofanthropology and Caribbean Studies. I am also the author of two scholarly bookson Haiti; the first published by the University Press of Florida and the secondcurrently under contract negotiation with another University publishing house;this book will be the first scholarly, field-researched academic study ofHaitian Vodou, magic and sorcery to have been published in over 25 years.I have been conducting ethnographic fieldworkstudying violence, childhood and Haitian Vodou in Port-au-Prince and theHaitian countryside since 1994. Over the past twenty-one years, I have spent acumulative period of around five-and-a-half years living in Haiti. I hold aPh.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Temple University (Philadelphia, PA), andhave spent half of my life researching among, living and working with, and participatingin the everyday lives of the Haitian peasantry. I am of course fluent in thelocal dialect known as Haitian Kréyol, and welcome inquiries in that language. In 2012, I was fully initiated as a devoteeinto the hounfor (temple) of the small hamlet known as Lakou Soukri. In2014, I underwent the high ritual of lave tèt at Soukri, and wasritually \"married\" to the lwa (Vodou spirit) named PapaWangol, one of the high spirits of the Kongo cult of Vodou. I bear on my rightforearm the vèvè (a stylized pictograph) representing this spirit, as aformal mark of my full induction into the Kongo cult of Vodou. Theseexperiences - cultivated over decades of respect, rapport, hard ritual work andlong anthropological immersion in the lives of the Haitians with whom I havedepended - have marked my full initiation into the inner religious lives of theVodouists of Haiti, and grant me peerless access to all of the knowledge, magicartifacts, and ritual objects that are almost exclusively and fiercelyhusbanded by Haitian devotees of the Vodou worldview.
